NASHVILLE, Tennessee-- The UAB softball team (22-15, 8-4 C-USA) dropped game one of a doubleheader,2-1, on a walk-off, but rebounded in game two to over the LadyBisons at Draper Diamond in Nashville Wednesday night.
In game one of the two-game set, UAB held a 1-0 leadthroughout the majority of the contest, but Lipscomb hit a double in the bottomof the seventh to top UAB, 2-1 and steal game one from the Blazers.
UAB fired back early in game two with a three-run home runfrom Mary Warren to lead 3-0, but after three, Lipscomb tied it back up as thetwo teams played locked at three runs each up until the seventh before AmyDennis delivered the go-ahead two-RBI single to put UAB up 5-3 and seal thegame two win.
Leigh Streetman went the full length in game one and allowedjust the two earned runs, both on the final hit of the game, to drop the 2-1decision. Lannah Campbell threw her ninth complete game of the season andearned the win in game two to improve to 8-6 after allowing three earned runson nine hits with six strikeouts.
Warren and Dennis both led UAB offensively with three RBI apiece on the day. Warren's three came on a first inning home run to deep centerfield in game two, while two of Dennis' three were the crucial runs that gaveUAB a 5-3 lead and win. Danii Fernandez and Megan McGrath both finished withtwo hits each, while Heather Pearson, Kristen McGrath, Hayley Davis, AshleyJohnson and Caitlin Attfield each had one hit.
UAB will be back in action this weekend at home as the in a crucial three-game Conference USA series atthe UAB Softball Field.
Lipscomb 2, UAB 1 (GameOne)UAB scored first for the 18th time this season in thefourth. After playing three scoreless innings, Amy Dennis broke up the 0-0 tiewith fundamental work on a squeeze bunt to score Hayley Davis from third, wholed off the inning with her third double of the season and give UAB a 1-0advantage in the fourth.
Lipscomb left two runners on for the second time in the gamein the sixth as Streetman worked a huge inning in the circle to escape a jamallowing no Lady Bisons runs to score. Neely and Cartwright both singled tolead off the inning, but Streetman drew two infield popups to Attfield at shortand a foul out to Johnson to escape a sixth-inning jam and allow UAB to take a1-0 lead to the seventh.
For the second-straight inning, Lipscomb began with a singleas the Lady Bisons' second batter of the inning reached on a fielder's choice.Following an infield putout with one away, Lipscomb's leadoff hitter delivereda walk-off double to left-center field to top UAB, 2-1, in game one.
UAB 5, Lipscomb 3(Game Two)The Blazers batted around in the first and took an earlylead, scoring first for the 19th game this season, with a three-run frame totake a 3-0 advantage over Lipscomb. Fernandez doubled to right field with oneout and Kristen McGrath walked to put two UAB runners on. With two on and one away,Warren lifted a deep home run to straightaway center, her third of the year, togive UAB a 3-0 lead. The Blazers would go on to bat around in the remainder ofthe inning, but left the bases loaded on a swinging strikeout.
Lipscomb answered back in the second inning with a singlerun. Following a 4-6-3 double play, Lipscomb's Mimi Cartwright got on first viaan infield single. Rena Cothron followed with a double to left-center field toplate the Lady Bisons' first run of the game and cut the UAB lead to 3-1.
The Lady Bisons responded right back in the third to platetwo runs on four hits three that never left the infield to tie the game at3-3. Lipscomb's leadoff hitter got the first hit of the frame, a single thatdeflected off the plate. Paige Neely followed with a single back to Campbell inthe circle, and Kelsey Cartwright grounded into a fielder's choice. HaleyElliott followed with a single past Fernandez at third to plate Lipscomb'ssecond run to setup runners at first and second for Kristen Sturdivant. Shesingled back to Campbell on a slow roller, and Cartwright came home to scoreafter being caught in a rundown to tie the game at 3-3.
UAB responded in a crucial situation in the seventh to platetwo runs and give UAB the go-ahead score. Warren led the inning off with asingle and she was replaced at first my Madison Hir who entered to pinch runfor the first time this season. Following a walk from Pearson, her third of thegame, Megan McGrath grounded out to third, but moved both runners over. Withone away and two on, Dennis singled hard to right-center field to plate bothHir and Pearson and give UAB the 5-3 advantage that would stand as the finalscore.
Lipscomb didn't go away quietly, though, as KelseyCartwright singled to left. However, she was out at second attempting to legout a double as Dennis fired a shot into the infield that deflected off theglove of Attfield, but Campbell was able to chorale it and tag Cartwright outat the second base bag to end the game.
