MCPS had only built four snow days into its calendar this year, but missed 10 days of school due to inclement weather, leaving uncertainty over how to make up the extra six days.
The school district had applied for a waiver from the state in order to not have to make up the remaining six snow days, but on Monday announced that State Superintendent Lillian Lowery had denied the waiver, but invited the district to re-apply for a modified waiver to make up at least some of the six days.
Tuesday, MCPS announced that a modified waiver had been approved, in which they will make up two snow days, and be waived for the other four.
The district announced that the two make-up days will be Monday, April 21 - usually known as Easter Monday - and Friday, June 13, which will be the last day of school.
In a statement released Tuesday, MCPS Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr said, We appreciate Dr. Lowery's recognition that this has been a very unusual winter, and her willingness to grant us some flexibility in our calendar. By holding classes on April 21 and June 13, we can make up two valuable days of instruction without significantly disrupting our community's summer schedules.
