-- On Friday, November 22, eleven students from eight schools in three South Alabama counties will compete in the Alabama Region 1 contest, determining who will move on to the state competition in February.

The program will begin at 11 a.m. in the Ben May Main Library's Bernheim Hall, located at 701 Government St.

A reception will follow and admission is free.

Poetry Out Loud () is an annual national recitation contest for high school students sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.

Competition begins in the classroom, with winners moving to school, regional, state and national levels. The top winner collects a ,000 cash prize, plus 0 for his or her school's library.

On Friday, eight students will recite poems selected from an official anthology in three rounds and three students will recite original poetry.

George E. Williams, 11th grade, Robertsdale High School in Baldwin County

Alyssa Brianna Anderson, 9th grade, Excel High School in Monroe County
