Barbara Park, author of the 'Junie B. Jones' series, died Friday, according to her publisher. (Random House)
is reporting that Barbara Park, the author of the popular "Junie B. Jones" children's book series, has died of ovarian cancer. She was 66.

Park, a native of Mt. Holly, N.J., was a graduate of the University of Alabama and a longtime resident of Scottsdale, Ariz. She is survived by her husband Richard, whom she met while a student in Tuscaloosa, and their two sons.

Elementary school readers for more than 20 years have followed the exploits of Park's most famous creation, Junie B. Jones, a kindergartner - and after 17 books - a first grader, who occasionally gets into trouble with her opinions. Her distinctive voice was sometimes apparent in the series' titles, such as "Junie B. Jones and Her Big Fat Mouth," "Junie B. Jones and Some Sneaky Peeky Spying," "Junie B. Jones and the Yucky Blucky Fruitcake," and "Junie B. Jones and Her Big Fat Mouth."

In an from her publisher Random House, Park said she originally wanted to become a teacher, but her experience student teaching scared her out of the profession. Instead, she concentrated on her family until she took up writing.
