-- Two men who resuscitated a young woman after she passed out during Mardi Gras celebrations were heralded today as the 's May .

Captains Bryan Smith and Chip Curreri were working a parade route for the Bureau of fire Prevention on Feb. 8. Curreri went to speak with someone from the Mobile Police Department while Smith settled in at the corner of Claiborne Street and Civic Center Drive, said MFRD spokesman Steve Huffman.

A short while later, Smith was called over by people in the crowd who claimed a girl had "passed out," Huffman said. Smith climbed the barricade and found a woman, estimated to be around 20 years old, lying on her side in the grass.

A bystander told Smith the woman had a heart condition. She was not breathing and had no pulse.

Smith asked a fellow MFRD employee to call for a medical team while he started CPR. Curreri joined him shortly after, providing mouth-to-mouth ventilation while Smith continued doing compressions, Huffman said.

When an MFRD Special Events medical team arrived, they used an AED to defibrillate the woman, restoring her pulse. She was sent to the hospital by Newman's EMS.

Only one, off-duty MFRD medic was providing advanced life support to the woman, so Smith volunteered to ride along to the hospital and continue caring for and stabilizing the woman, along with a paramedic for Newman's EMS. Another firefighter, who also worked as an EMT, rode along to provide assistance, Huffman said.

The woman was taken to the emergency room at Springhill Medical Center, where she stayed briefly before being released.

It is the first time in recent months that two MFRD employees were named Firefighter of the Month for a single month.
