As long as Uncle Sam is taking care of everything, I think it's time we had an Affordable CAR Act.
Thousands of poor people are walking, or standing, every day, waiting for a ride, a bus, a train or a subway because they cannot afford a new car of their own.
Millions of desperate people cling to inadequate, obsolete and often ugly cars, wasting gas, money and ruining the aesthetic beauty of our country while they could be driving in style and comfort. This is a crisis of monumental proportion!
If you like your car you can keep it, as long as it meets federal standards (i.e. hands-free cell phone, GPS, backup monitor, MP3 player and headlight wipers, etc.). If not, then you lose your old car immediately (it was substandard, anyway) and you can go to the government exchange to get one, maybe qualifying for a subsidy that your neighbor will pay.
When it becomes law everyone (except the Administration, Congress and a few unions) will be driving new cars, or face a penalty... I mean tax.
They might even consider a package deal, like bundling Affordable Cars with Internet-access Obamaphones and medical care. Wouldn't it be wonderful?
