The Rev. "Buz" Wilcoxon is shown with his wife, Ryann, and children, Wilson and Lohi, on Easter Sunday 2013 in Greenville, S.C. (Fourth Presbyterian website)
Spring Hill Presbyterian Church in Mobile will welcome a new senior pastor, Rev. Searcy Buz Allen Wilcoxon IV, on Sunday, Dec. 1.
Wilcoxon, who grew up in Tuscaloosa and Fairhope, has served as associate pastor at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Greenville, S.C., since 2008.
The hire culminates a search that has taken about a year, leaders said.
We were looking for someone who has a real love for the church and a strong commitment to the denomination who can provide really excellent leadership in terms of helping us define where we feel we are being called as a church and leading us in that direction, said Sue Martino, who chaired the search committee.
Wilcoxon holds a bachelor of arts in religion and philosophy, and a minor in history, from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. He has a master of divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Ga., and plans to complete a doctor of ministry degree in 2014.
In a letter to the congregation, Wilcoxon wrote that he had heard of the Spring Hill Presbyterian church community while growing up in Fairhope.
Over the course of the last year, I have gotten the chance to hear much more about your story, he wrote. I have been awed by the strong traditions from your past and the mission-minded convictions about your future.
Wilcoxon graduated from Fairhope High School in 2001. He is married to Ryann Jordan Wilcoxon, and they have two children, ages 3 and 1.
The Rev. J. Michael Anderson, who has served as supply senior pastor at Spring Hill, held his final worship service there this past Sunday, Martino said.
